Ways to Explore Nature as a Senior

Nature is one of God’s most beautiful creations. Through nature, God speaks to us, provides for us and teaches us. For this reason, it’s good just to spend time outdoors enjoying all the world has to offer. For seniors, there are many ways to take in the scenery, regardless of your fitness level. Consider the following ways you can enjoy nature.

Explore the Gardens

At Bethesda Gardens in Terre Haute, Indiana, we pride ourselves on our beautifully landscaped grounds and gardens. When you live in our assisted living community, you only need to step outside and take a walk to enjoy the flowers. If you like birds, Terre Haute is home to the Lark Sparrow, Warblers, Baltimore Orioles, Northern Parulas and Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers, so there’s a good chance you’ll spot one on your stroll.

Plant a Garden

You don’t need a green thumb to plant a small container garden. Whether you want to plant several containers of roses or want to enjoy a small batch of fresh herbs, a container garden provides a way to play with potting soil and get some sun.

Go Fishing

When the grandkids come to visit, get them away from their phones and other electronics and take them to the Wabashiki fish and wildlife area for fishing. The park has plenty of hiking trails and a picnic area to enjoy for lunch.

Take an Excursion

Get away from the assisted living facility with the family or enjoy one of our scheduled outings. There are plenty of activities to keep you outdoors, including apple picking at the Ditzler apple orchard or pumpkin picking in the fall at Fry’s Pumpkins, which is just 16 miles from Terre Haute. You’ll also find a downtown farmer’s market from May to November at the Meadows Shopping Center.

Enjoy a New Sport

There are plenty of games and sports that help seniors stay physically fit. Sign up with your friends for a weekly game of golf, or if you aren’t competitive, you could always play miniature golf. There's also senior’s tennis with the Wabash Valley tennis club, or you could grab a bicycle and pedal along the trails at one of the local parks.

Spending time outdoors is an excellent way for seniors to improve their physical health, reduce anxiety and depression and experience a change of pace. Regardless of your fitness level, there are plenty of outdoor activities to keep you active.
