Mother’s Day Bible Verses

Mother’s Day Bible Verses

At Bethesda Gardens in Terre Haute, we understand that there are many chapters in a mother's life, and we believe that each mom and each step of the journey is to be treasured.

As students of the Bible, we also believe that moms hold a special place in God's heart. To help seniors in their own studies this Mother's Day, here are some of our favorite verses about God's relationship with moms.

From Hannah to the widow of Nain, the Bible is filled with stories of God's tenderness towards moms. Among the most powerful examples is when Jesus made provisions for His mother's care even as He was suffering on the cross.

When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, "Woman, here is your son" and to the disciple "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. John 19:26-27

As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out — the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, "Don't cry."
Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, "Young man, I say to you, get up!"
The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. Luke 7:12-15

He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young. Isaiah 40:11

In many ancient cultures, mothers were often ignored or treated no better then slaves. However, from the beginning, God instructed His followers to cherish and to listen to both their parents.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. "Honor your father and mother" — which is the first commandment with a promise — "so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth. Ephesians 6:1-3

Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching. They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. Proverbs 1:8-9

Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity. 1 Timothy 5:1-2

God has assured us that nothing can separate us from His love (Romans 8:39) and that He will never leave us or forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:8). This commitment is perhaps most evident in regards to His promises to watch over widows who may often feel alone and like they have no one to turn to for help.

A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. Psalm 68:5

The LORD tears down the house of the proud, but he sets the widow's boundary stones in place. Proverbs 15:25

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. James 1:27
